The Inspiration for Alphabet Smash – A Christian Homeschool Pre-K and K Curriculum
I am ashamed to admit this, but I used to make fun of homeschoolers. Who would want to homeschool? I love that God has such a sense of humor. Especially believing that I, the girl who dreads change, could ever even conceive of being in charge of my children’s education.

History
I remember going to Williamsburg with my aunt when my oldest was 18 months old. We were behind a small group of kids, probably siblings, who were asking the historical re-enactors questions. Good questions. My aunt said, “I bet those kids are homeschooled,” I was like, “No way.” But was so intrigued, I asked them and sure enough, they were. There is a special something I have found (ever since) in homeschoolers that is so obvious to me now. But having that happen when my daughter was 18 months old was THE most convincing reason. After that, God kept putting people in my path. Homeschooling was not in my comfort zone, for sure.
The Beginning
Once I was convinced to give homeschooling a try jump into homeschooling with both feet, I went online and ordered a full boxed curriculum that was highly recommended by some homeschool moms, the internet, and a few local Christian schools. The thought of doing this on my own was so exciting. I checked my porch each day waiting upon the arrival of the ‘box’ of homeschooling books and materials. I was ready to begin pre-school with my daughter!
When it came in, I sat crossed legged on the floor inspecting every single thing. Then I read all the prep, set up, and assembly required. There was so much to prepare; laminating, and cutting out before we could even begin. Too much. My heart fell sank. There were tears. I was truly devastated.
I sent it back… wondering if I was cut out for homeschooling at all. And thinking maybe this was all a big mistake.
Learning Curve
Since then I have read books about how important it is to teach to your child’s learning style. But out of the gate, and now 15 years later, it is just as important that you like this learning style and that it fits with your teaching style. And even more important than that, it must be fun.
As my confidence grew, I discovered I didn’t like many of the alphabet activities I found. Most consisted of boring worksheets and were more academic driven rather than play driven.
The Inspiration for Alphabet Smash – Stepping out on Faith
So….I decided to so my own thing. And to do it my own way. I knew what I wanted. I created a letter of the week for each letter, pulling resources from online, the library, and real life for every letter of the alphabet. I didn’t realize I had made my own curriculum. I just knew that I wanted to have fun with my kids and I didn’t want it to be a drudgery.
