“Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled” ~ Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Adventure Group adventured on a field trip to Moss Flower Refuge, an ARC (Animal Rehabilitation of the Carolinas).

Pat is very knowledgeable and has been helping animals for over 15 years…  Really since she was a little girl learning from her dad.

We listened to some amazing stories.  Did you know it is illegal to keep a deer with out a special license?  And that a deer is part of the goat family?

We learned about what rehabilitation entails; money, hard work, sleepless nights, sometimes heart break and a tremendous love for animals. It was interesting to note that most injuries are caused by man; whether by a vehicle, hunters (many hunters actually bring her fawns to care for), and other accidents.

It is good to know who to call if we find another injured animal.  I remember when my little one found a squirrel and saved his whole entire life.  Or so she thought.

Did you know that a squirrel’s teeth never stop growing?  Or that an Opossum carries her babies in her pouch and they nearly swallow her nipple like a tube?  This makes it hard to feed babies when they are rescued.  They can’t see well either which is why you usually see them hit in the road.  Many times she has a litter in her pocket.  I have never thought about that before when I see one in the road.

We learned a funny joke too, “Why did the chicken cross the road?……...wait for it…………….To show the opossum how.”  snort snort

We watched a slide show of many of the animals Pat has helped.

And met some interesting critters… This bird does not like girls.

…even the horses are rescues.

We fed her ducks and goat and found a couple bird feathers too.

What a blessing that God made beautiful people like Pat who love animals and have the gift of a healing touch.

“Animal lovers are a special breed of humans, generous of spirit, full of empathy, perhaps a little prone to sentimentality, and with hearts as big as a cloudless sky”― John Grogan
