Continued from The Accident, Part One…..

“Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?” Hebrews 1:14 (ESV)

They first saw her come through an obscure door in ICU.  Richard spent several days there, after the accident, while they waited for him to regain consciousness.

His mom and dad never saw anyone come through that door except the old woman who wore the jade green beveled glasses.

Richard called her Mrs. Grasshopper.  She wasn’t a nurse.  They assumed she was some kind of volunteer.

 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” Psalm 91:11 (ESV)

She would come in by his bedside and lay her hands on him.  She would rub his arms and legs when he was in considerable pain, on morphine, and not doing well.  “She was like a drug to him.”, his mom told me.  When he was fretful, she would calm him down.  She always comforted him, telling him he would walk again.

“The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.” Psalm 34:7 (ESV)

The Doctors, however,  said Richard would not walk again.  The two neurosurgeons said he would not walk again.  There was even some kind of Catastrophic Committee that said it was best “…not to encourage him.  He will go home and not walk.”  He was listed as a paraplegic.  I can’t imagine how my mother-in-law’s heart must have been breaking for her son.

But during this time, Mrs. Grasshopper looked her directly in her eyes, took hold of both her hands and said, “Don’t worry about your son,  he will be fine.”  And she believed her.

And he was fine.  Richard did learn to walk again.  Against all the odds.

My father and mother -in-law always wanted to go back and see if that door was really there.

Later, after months of rehab, Richard did go back and ask about this woman.  He described her in detail and told what she did for him and they told him that there was no such woman who fit that description ever working or volunteering there.  That they didn’t allow just anyone to come into ICU.

So, who was she?

Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Hebrews 13:2 (ESV)
