{Lesson 7} God is in Haiti – Series: 7 Life Lessons I Learned in Haiti:
Seeing God moving in Haiti was humbling. The evidence of Him was everywhere. That first day was really hard. We were all trying to come to terms with the scope of poverty we witnessed on our drive from the airport in Port-Au-Prince. But it was undeniable that God was there.
As I listened to our host’s vision for Haiti and his plans to raise disciples, it literally gave me goosebumps. Never have I met a man with a vision like our host, Fenel, the founder of House of Abraham. If I had done just a fraction of what he has done in his short 29 years, I would feel very accomplished.
I recognized God in Fenel.
This picture was on the plans he made for the orphanage dormitory that was being built during our visit; built to house more than a dozen children and the caretakers.
I witnessed God
in the bucket brigade of concrete that we helped pour into the foundation of the new orphanage dormitory. The answered prayer was going up before our eyes.
Despite reading about the presence of voodoo in Haiti, I instead felt the presence of the one true God.
He was everywhere.
I beheld Him in worship.
I felt Him in the gifts.
I heard Him in the songs.
I sensed Him in the church.
I contemplated Him in the poverty and the beauty of Haiti.
I felt God in the prayers
And perceived Him
in our rooftop devotions, testimonies, and songs. I am learning to sense the peace that is all Him.
I witnessed God in the children.
I noticed God in the sunsets and sunrises.
I glimpsed God
in the doctor who took the seats out of his car after the earthquake and used it for an ambulance.
There are good people full of the goodness of God all over this world.
His reminders where everywhere…
I don’t know why I was overcome with God’s presence in Haiti. I know intuitively that He is everywhere. I have read of His omnipresence. But finding Him in the people and places we visited is something I will never forget.
Psalms 139:7-12
Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me. If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night,” Even the darkness is not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day Darkness and light are alike to You.
