I can hear the sound of September.

And notice the sounds of our year.  They change.

Starting with the summer…

After a few jerks and stops,  we find our summer adagio; still active but finding tempo in restful and slower movements.  Finding a routine.

Summer is a relief, salty and bitter sweet.  Time is passing so fast.  16 summers already spent with my oldest.  I wished I had paid better attention.  Time slips out of our hands like sand.  Where did June and July go?  We squeeze the last bit of summer out of August.

And say good bye to summer.  I want an encore!

I start a-capella with all the planning, schedules, and books to buy.  When the end of August slips in, it is time to get back in a school routine to figure it out all over again.  Each year is different.  We have all changed and grown a bit.  A new year, new schedules, new rhythms…we start with a vivace (a brisk, lively, spirited) dance.  It is Back to (home)school.  We begin again.

I help direct this crazy messy little homeschool orchestra. Not a symphony of instruments; Instead… Junior classes, middle school, and second grade; Bookwork, music, dance, karate, speech.  But Jesus is the conductor.  When we take our eyes off Him there is chaos.  Dissonance.

fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith……”  Hebrews 12:2

We are learning, laughing, and living.  We are thankful.

When September rolls in, the sounds change.

Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10

September’s beat is all its own.  Each of us are figuring out it’s rhythm and our place in it.  I am no virtuoso.  Sometimes I feel toneless.  We often sing off key.   But I love the sound of this month.  Can you hear?

Come October, we sound more in unison. A chorus of harmony.  A steadier rhythm.  Grace offered is a sweet serenade.  I want it to get stuck on my lips, like a refrain. But I forget and then start again.

We go strong until Christmas.  December is a fast flurry of parties and get togethers, our allegro. Then we stop for a couple weeks and rest. Almost 1/2 way done with the year.

January is a slow uphill climb.  It is hard to find the beat again.  Some things need fine tuning.

We Hum Steady in February and March like the song of the cicadas.  Spring sings in.

Then April arrives- staccatos… finishing and fitting in; prom, end of year tests, SAT’s, finishing textbooks and projects and speeches. Tired kids and tired mama.

It overlaps into May with a crazy big band ending.  The crescendo that began in August ends in our grandioso. Wrapped up in ceremony.

The finale.

But right now, we listen to the sound of September.  This moment.
